Alfredo Barsuglia
Alfredo Barsuglia was one of the first artists to take part in Konschthal Esch’s 2021 programme. For this collaboration, Barsuglia placed his sculpture Das Wunder (The Miracle) on the loading bay of the brand new institution.
The surprising and at the same time playful nature of this reappropriated object (a car placed upright upon an upside-down car, such that they share the same wheels, making them look like a kind of giant insect) attracted attention from onlookers and created a disconcerting image of urban mobility (notably of searching for a parking spot in Esch). Bursuglia’s strategy of combining surprise and humour as well as also subtle reflections upon our habits and daily lives is found frequently in his work, which often involves participation and transforms spectators into active agents in the artistic process.
In recent weeks, Barsuglia has been developing a large-scale project for ZOOM Kindermuseum in Vienna. This experience and his work on combining narration and fiction through the prism of contemporary art will be the subject of ongoing process of reflection at the Bridderhaus. Barsuglia questions our habits and behaviour, not without a certain humour but also with a desire to contribute to reconsidering and changing them. As a contributor to the Esch Biennale 2024, the theme of which is “architectures”, his work contributes to developing a more playful approach to our lived environment.
